73 351C Block vs the 73 454SS Block
#1
After staying close to the 351 is it a BB or SB post, I think a lot of you know I built a 73 Chevelle 454SS before I bought my 73 Q code. Have no problem giving out the specs on either. (454 is done BTW) and has been claimed by my son who is on me hard to finish the Mustang so we can race and see if the SB beating a BB is truth or myth here in NC. (He doesn't care much for reading articles, wants to see lights) SOOOOOO!
Ask what you want (I don't need to lie) in the future 454 vs. 351 1/4 mile drag that will happen. Will tell you now neither is stock and neither is completely 73. Thought this might generate some input.

While stationed in the Republic of the Philippines, my best friend had a '70 454 Chevelle LS-5 with a four-speed. During that time, I was running a 351CJ with a pumped C6 in my '73 Mach 1.

Both cars were highly modified, Sig Erson solid lifter Cams and similar gears (4:56 and 4:57, respectively). He was always a bit quicker than me in the quarter mile, although I would be rapidly gaining on him. I know the extra cubes were getting me in the lower RPMs, what with his torque. He was only turning about 6500-6800 RPM while I was hitting close to 7400 RPM.

While I know I could have done better with a 4:86 gear, I chose to stick in an SK-cammed 428CJ with Toploader. That is what I currently have in the car but I am going to a 545, REAL SOON!

In high school I ran a healthy 1970 GT Torino M code 351C backed by a FMX and an open under 3:00 9". My friend ran a 1964 Chevelle SS with a built 396, turbo 400 with 4:11 posi. He would pull me in first and then I would jump even and then ahead when I hit second. By the 1/4 mile mark he was starting to fade and I was starting to really run.
