dash light won't work
#1
Hi, just installed new radio & cut off one of the connectors to give power to the radio but now my dash lights won't work. Out of 3 connectors behind the radio, this was the only one available bc other two are for temp. Control unit & light bulb for the unit. If I turn the key & connect all 3 wires togather lights do come on.
Please help if you can.
Thanks, (72, 351c, conv.)

You might try looking at the wiring diagram under the data tab at the top of the page and see if it helps.

I would just reconnect the wire you cut and see if everything goes back to normal. If not, then check to make sure you didn't bump the light switch knob and accidentally dimmed the lights while doing the radio install Smile

if it was the radio 2 prong connector you cut, it should have a larger male connector on one side and a slighter smaller female connector on the other. (if my memory is so-so.

both those wires are +12 volts not pos and neg.

the larger wire feeds the radio the smaller feeds the lights to the radio.

if you dead shorted them the dash lights would go out.

the negative is the body ground.

again not sure how you cut and connected the wires.

a better way would of been to use the accessory post that comes off the fuse box and feed ignition switched +12 to the new radio and bypass the radio connector, so if you wanted to go back to OEM you could, or run a new wire from the battery with an ignition noise suppressor.

all the fuse boxes came with a half finished fuse post on the fuse box towards the firewall, you can snap in a 10-20 amp fuse on this post and then run another lead off the other side of the fuse it runs power when the ignition is turned.

now for aftermarket radio that is a problem for the presets and clock, so some people run a wire that is smaller to 12 volt all the time.
then you have another issue with light dimming so you run a 3rd wire to tie in the dimmer to the new radio.

Guys, thanks for everyone's help. It was just the fuse. That fuse is tiny & over the years it became dirty which made it even harder.

Thanks again,
