Which parts of the headlight bucket assembly is painted in slop grey 1973? - timachone - 12-28-2018

See question above - I have some different sources... Also the 429 Megasite is not that clear on that fact...

Thanks!

Tim,

These pics should help... essentially the base and the 90 degree brackets are Slop Gray.

Also the bracket that supports the hood latch is Slop Gray.
I do not know if you are just doing some detailing of grill or  whole car. The other parts that I know of that are Slop Gray are the shock tower braces and the bolt on part of the shock tower under the fender.
The caps for the shocks, hood latch, hood hinges, gas pedal bracket and emergency brake mech. is done with Parkerizing or phosphate, gray dull finish.

Rich,

thank you for clearing that out! It is the base I did not know of! Great, will do it again in Slop Grey.

@David:
Thank you. I do the whole thing and see now that I had done the other things right by your list!

Tim,
In addition to David's list, you might want to paints these parts slop gray....

Notice that there are two shades of slop gray in the pictures. I have a very original Sept 72 Dearborn built car with the darker/greenish tint slop gray, and I have seen original late production Dearborn cars with the lighter gray. The shade also varied at each plant for those years where Metuchen and other plants were building them.

Just to point out, the Megasite is 71 specific. It also is static and not likely to change, even if you show that there may be a variation to the information they have posted.

Rich,

thank you very much for the detailed insight!

That looks like I kept all parts in mind... except the rear bumber mounts (they were a very dark color on mine) and the battery tray. Are you sure about the battery tray? Never seen that...

Tim,

I know that many of the same parts on 69/70 mustangs were slop gray including battery trays. That said I have never seen it in person or pictures on a 71-73, but I recall reading that the factory originals were gray. Its hard to be sure since most of them have been replaced a long time ago or are so corroded from battery acid and time that you can't tell anymore. The NOS Ford service replacement tray I have and I used in my car was dipped in black. Maybe David can tell on his original 73 mach what color his tray is.

You can go either way on it and not be wrong.

Rich

Rich,

thank you for investigations. It is an interesting statement I never knew before. Perhaps one of the origina owners here can chime in and confirm this.
