1973 Mach 1
My 1973 Mach 1 purchased September 3rd 1973. 98,000 original miles.I was 19 and in the US Navy when I bought it from Horn Williams Ford in Dallas Texas.I drove it daily, street raced and drag raced it. My wife and I drove it on our wedding night.I took it off the streets in the 1980s and drag raced it full time.First with an open chamber High reving Cleveland, lot's of fun ! I let my machine shop freinds talk me into swapping to a 429 / 460. It was a little quicker but not near the trap speeds of the little Cleveland.
I did a bare metal restoration starting in 1990 and started showing the car. In 1996 I let my son's take it to the local cruise nights.Let my oldest make his first pass down the drag strip at 15 and almost got kicked off the track (no license).
My youngest son drove it back and forth to school and around town untill he bounced a curve with it.Luckly the only damage was a bent strut rod and a set of crushed headers.Thats when I parked it for a couple of years.I took the 460 out, hated the way the car handeled, and went back to the Cobra jet Cleveland.
I showed it some more until I got bored with it and now I go play a couple of times a month at differant tracks in the area.I am having a blast with it! We are not fast but consistent and always gathers a crowd.
The last time out I was in the staging lanes next to a red 2004 Mach 1 that was supercharged and very fast. The young guys with the car came and looked at mine and were just amazed at my car.The comment from one of the guys made me smile. He said "Man that is old school".They could not run there car full out for fear of breaking parts, not me.I am all in it with no fear!
I do want to up grade some things just not sure yet which way to go.More cubes or switch to a 5 spd.

A great looking car and the history is wonderful. I wish I'd kept my car when Uncle Sam sent me over seas. If I ever get my 72 CJ finished I'll let you know how the pump gas 408C works at the track.

RE: 1973 Mach 1
Hello FastE,

what a story & what a car.Its rare to meet people with a history like yours and i really appreciate that and would love to talk to you in person.Funny thing, last year a friend of mine (73 Mach1) and i were also called "old scool" by some younger publicracer (VW-driver) at the Hockenheim-strip.At first we couldn't believe, but after a few drinks we smiled about it. Time flies....
Again ,you have a very nice car,
may the fun always be with you .... Smile
bye
